LiAl y Co1 − y  O 2  (  R 3̄m )  Intercalation Cathode for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries

Abstract: LiAlyCO1−yO2 solid solutions of α‐NaFeO2 structure type have been synthesized from homogeneous hydroxide precursors. X‐ray powder diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy show that single‐phase solid solutions are formed up to y ≈ 0.5 at 800°C in air. Electrochemical tests using nonaqueous liquid electrolyte cells shows that the open‐circuit voltage and working voltage increase with Al content as predicted by ab initio calculations [Ceder et al., Nature, 392, 694 (1998)], while capacity fad… Show more

“…For this ligand exchange, we start by collecting the material first by using centrifugation after the synthesis. It is then dispersed in CHCl 3 . A solution of citric acid in water is added, yielding a two-phase system.…”

“…Commercial lithium ion batteries are cobalt-based and limited to applications in small portable electronic devices due to the practical capacity limitation [1][2][3], cost and safety issues [4,5]. Future energy storage devices need advanced materials to fulfill the higher demands in terms of energy density and safety, while reducing the cost and environmental concerns.…”

“…In a pristine state, the XRD pattern of as-received LiCoO 2 on the bottom of Figure 5a is typical of LiCoO 2 in the R3M space group. 36,37 After over-insertion cycling of as-received LiCoO 2 , the relative intensity of the {003} peak decreases significantly, with the ratio of {003} peak to the {104} peak decreasing from 2.00 to 1.09. Figure 5b shows the XRD patterns of AlPO 4 coated LiCoO 2 in a pristine state and after overdischarge cycling.…”

“…In all of these cases, the composition-induced stressfree strains are beyond the failure strains of most brittle materials. As a result, there have been numerous observations of mechanical deformation and battery peformance degradation associated with these shape changes [144][145][146][147][148][149][150][151][152][153]. This electrochemical-cycling-induced fracture has been termed "electrochemical shock," by analogy to thermal shock of brittle materials [13].…”
