LextPT: A reliable and efficient vocabulary size test for L2 Portuguese proficiency

Abstract: Vocabulary size has been recurrently shown to be a good indicator of second language (L2) proficiency. Among the many existing vocabulary tests, the LexTALE test and its equivalents are growing in popularity since they provide for experimental research a rapid (within 5 minutes) and objective way to assess the L2 proficiency of several languages (English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Italian). In this study, expanding on the standard procedure of test construction in previous Lextale tests, we develop a vocab… Show more

“…In line with lextale-type tests developed for other languages (e.g., Amenta et al, 2020 ; Izura et al, 2014 ; Zhou & Li, 2022 ), the present study develops LexCHI in two studies by testing L1 Chinese speakers as well as L2 Chinese speakers. “…Like other lextale extensions (e.g., Amenta et al, 2020 ; Izura et al, 2014 ; Zhou & Li, 2022 ), the final set of items in LexCHI would be evaluated with a new group of native and non-native speakers of Chinese in Experiment 2 . Experiment 2 also includes the LEXTALE_CH character test, a cloze test and a translation task.…”

“…In order to measure participants' verbal proficiency in their first language (Polish), we looked for a quick but reliable performance test. We selected LexTale (Lemhöfer & Broersma, 2012), a well-established vocabulary test that takes only 5 minutes to complete and is available in many language versions (Zhou & Li, 2021). In order to create a usable version of LexTale-PL we created 5 a list of 108 Polish words and nonwords based on recommendations for creating such tasks (Brysbaert, 2013).…”

“…The first type, known as vocabulary size test (VST), focuses on estimating the total number of words an individual knows in a specific language. VSTs have been developed for various languages, including Arabic (Masrai & Milton, 2019), Dutch (Eyckmans, 2004), French (Batista & Horst, 2016; Brysbaert, 2013; Peters et al, 2019), Italian (Amenta et al, 2020), Korean (Rescorla et al, 2013), Portuguese (Zhou & Li, 2022), and Spanish (Izura et al, 2014), and particularly English. The existing English VSTs include Eurocentres Vocabulary Size Test (Meara & Buxton, 1987; Meara & Jones, 1990) and Vocabulary Size Test (Beglar, 2010; Nation & Beglar, 2007).…”
