Levobupivacaine Combined with Cisatracurium in Peribulbar Anaesthesia in Cats Undergoing Corneal and Lens Surgery

Abstract: The aims of the study included evaluating the effects of levobupivacaine combined with cisatracurium on akinesia and mydriasis when administered by peribulbar injection, and evaluating if the chosen dose of cisatracurium is enough to avoid the use of systemic neuromuscular blockade in cats. The animals were divided into four groups as follows: group L received 1.25 mg kg−1 levobupivacaine administered by peribulbar injection; group LC received the same dose of levobupivacaine combined with 0.01 mg kg−1 of cisa… Show more

“…Caudal epidural anaesthesia 21 and local infiltration 22 are locoregional techniques commonly utilised for pain management during umbilical surgeries in calves. However, epidural anaesthesia may present potential complications such as hypotension, infection, inadvertent subarachnoid injection and bilateral pelvic limb paralysis.…”

“…9,13 In order to optimise analgesia without incurring additional side effects, it may be advisable to employ regional nerve blocks. 14,15 The QL block is one such technique, although its mechanism has not yet been fully clarified, it provides analgesia of the ventral branches of caudal thoracic and lumbar spinal nerve roots, responsible for somatic innervation. [16][17][18] Some studies suggest that the QL block provides somatic analgesia in the mid-caudal abdomen and possibly visceral analgesia in the mid-abdomen.…”

“…The different use of the alpha-two appears to elicit a more pronounced clinical response in terms of tear production and duration of effect [ 37 ]. The alpha-2 agonists show a dose-dependent clinical effect, particularly with regard to cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic effects, where a more pronounced effect is manifested as the dose increases until a ceiling effect is reached [ 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Comparing studies from a clinical response point of view is complicated.…”
