Leveraging the science of stress to promote resilience and optimize mental health interventions during adolescence

Abstract: Adolescence is marked by heightened stress exposure and psychopathology, but also vast potential for opportunity. We highlight how researchers can leverage both developmental and individual differences in stress responding and corticolimbic circuitry to optimize interventions during this unique developmental period.

“…Despite the promise of these findings to inform the selection and timing of specific interventions, the role of pubertal recalibration in longer-term socioemotional functioning is not yet fully understood and recent longitudinal analyses suggest that recalibration may be associated with poorer adjustment in the longer term (N. B. Perry et al, 2020, 2022). The consideration of these developmental processes—alongside heterogeneity in individual- and family-level factors related to adversity—may inform when and for whom specific interventions have the potential to be maximally effective for shaping or reshaping caregiving influences on youth resilience (Cohodes et al, 2021; Gee et al, 2022; Ghosh Ippen et al, 2011; Sisk & Gee, 2022).…”

“…Considering developmental and individual differences, and their interactions, can offer even stronger knowledge with which to guide targeted interventions (D. G. Gee, Sisk, et al, 2022). For example, interventions could be tailored for a given individual based on factors such as an individual's profile of adversity exposure (Cohodes, Kitt, et al, 2021) or patterns of parent-child interaction (Kitt et al, 2022).…”

“…The adolescent years are pivotal for establishing the patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that ultimately determine one's psychological health (Gee et al, 2022). While 14% of people aged 10-19 worldwide are affected by mental disorders, the vast majority of these cases go undetected and untreated (Organization, 2021).…”

“…Genetic, biological, individual, and environmental factors can contribute to adolescent psychological disorders (Uher & Zwicker, 2017). However, it is widely accepted that mental health promotion and preventive programs that employ numerous platforms, such as schools or communities, to enhance people's capacity to manage their emotions on several levels may vastly improve adolescents' mental health (Colizzi et al, 2020;Gee et al, 2022).…”
