Leveraging the opportunities of mixed methods in research synthesis: Key decisions in systematic mixed studies review methodology

Abstract: This article identifies and unpacks three key decision points in a systematic mixed research synthesis, a mixed methods approach to research synthesis. The research community has increasingly recognized the value of synthesis studies in expanding our understanding of phenomena. Mixed‐methodology broadly has also gained ground as a pragmatic approach to research investigations. By leveraging mixed methods approaches in a synthesis review, systematic mixed studies review (SMSR) enables a broad and integrated sum… Show more

“…Furthermore, the use of mixed methods allows more thorough analysis because it helps explore both the breadth and depth of educational phenomena, resulting in a fuller and more extensive understanding of the topic under investigation (Ponce & Pagán-Maldonado, 2015;Ferguson et al, 2020).…”

“…33 Mixed methods synthesis allows for a holistic understanding of the topic by integrating findings from multiple sources of data and study types. 34 As this review aims to explore several research questions, a parallel-results convergent design for synthesising the data is likely to be the most relevant. 31 This synthesis design allows qualitative and quantitative evidence to be analysed separately and then brought together at the discussion and recommendation stage.…”

“…The review also asked whether people living with chronic conditions and their care partners experience changes in stress, anxiety symptoms, or depression symptoms after using MBI together (Section 3.1 on page 63)? The systematic mixed studies review used a segregated explanatory sequential design, which involved an initial quantitative synthesis followed by a qualitative synthesis (Ferguson, Kerrigan and Hovey, 2020) (Section 4.4 on page 66).…”

“…direction of effect) followed by a qualitative synthesis (e.g. thematic synthesis) (Ferguson, Kerrigan and Hovey, 2020). Priority was given to the initial quantitative stage because the original review retrieved mostly quantitative studies (n=6) and it was anticipated that the update would also retrieve mainly quantitative studies .…”
