Leveraging Text-Chart Links to Support Authoring of Data-Driven Articles with VizFlow

Abstract: Figure 1: DATATALES user interface including an interactive visualization (A), generated stories panel (B), and a history of generated stories (C).Here, as the user hovers the cursor over a sentence in the generated story, the system dynamically highlights the marks corresponding to the text (in this case, the bars for the months of May and June).

“…In contrast to their approach, we provide our stories on the web and not as video and have a broader focus than molecular visualization. VizFlow by Sultanum et al [43] instead focused on data-driven articles. The authors used text-chart linking strategies to create scrollytelling experiences and evaluated their approach with 12 authoring and 24 reading participants.…”

“…Idyll [102] provides a "scroller" component for building scrolling narratives, allowing users to control document style, layout, and control pages by clicking or scrolling. Sultanum et al [103] explored a data-driven article storytelling authoring approach separating semantics, textual and graphical links, and storytelling layout forms. The researchers built VizFlow, a concept authoring tool for creating dynamic datadriven articles based on this approach.…”

“…(1) Design space: Outlines how to use automatic sequencing in design systems to guide non-designers in making structured decisions when creating narrative visualizations [97]. (2) Authoring tool: converts static data-driven articles (with text and charts) into dynamic articles using text-graph links [103]. (3) AI-supported tool: Tedric system workflow, which can be used to train presentation skills, reduce barriers to impromptu speaking and generate slideshow based on audience suggestions [104].…”

“…Systems like Kori [31,32] and VizFlow [49] provide explicit linking strategies between the two modalities following design patterns that have emerged for data storytelling, narrative sequencing, and rhetoric [18,19]. While these systems demonstrate the utility of designing text and charts together, it is still unclear how to balance between the two modalities (e.g., is too much or too little text still useful?).…”
