Leveraging human nutrition through livestock interventions: perceptions, knowledge, barriers and opportunities in the Sahel

Abstract: The potential of livestock and animal-source foods (ASF) to improve nutrition of vulnerable households in the Sahel countries is large, but currently underutilised, despite the dependence of human nutrition on livestock in some areas. This study assesses the perceptions of the linkages between livestock and human nutrition interventions by West African implementers; the challenges faced; and the lessons learnt to significantly leverage nutrition in livestock interventions. Here, we report a qualitative study c… Show more

“…The production pathway's influence on child nutrition varies widely, including by food item, market engagement, and other contextual factors ( 14 ). Socioeconomic status, cultural practices that limit or restrict ASF consumption, the capacity and/or opportunity for storage and preservation of ASF, community and household-level gender dynamics, and intra-household resource allocation are all factors that can affect individual ASF consumption ( 15 ). Many households engage in selling livestock or livestock products for income, which complicates an understanding of how livestock production may affect diets.…”

“…The gaps in the priorities and attitudes of livestock farmers impede the development of successful livestock policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of poor cattle farmers (Bettencourt et al, 2015;FAO, 2016). There is therefore a need to emphasize that efforts to improve the rural livestock production and the market supply of quality live animals understand the objectives, perceptions and experience of livestock keepers (Dominguez-Salas et al, 2019;Salmon et al, 2018).…”

“…Although theoretically able to meet all nutritional needs when supplemented, vegan food supply risks being less robust (White and Hall, 2017). This is particularly the case for low-and middleincome countries (Hulett et al, 2014;Domínguez-Salas et al, 2019;Adesogan et al, 2020), but also for vulnerable populations in high-income countries (cf. Koebnick et al, 2004;Phillips, 2012;Fayet et al, 2014;Tang and Krebs, 2014;Cofnas, 2019).…”
