Levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and pigment epithelium-derived factor in eyes before and after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab

Abstract: An intravitreal injection of bevacizumab significantly decreased the free VEGF in the aqueous humor by 7 days, indicating that the clinical effects of bevacizumab appear rapidly. However, intravitreal bevacizumab did not affect the level of intraocular PEDF.

“…Levels of VEGF are increased in the vitreous of eyes with PDR. Blockage of VEGF has been associated with inhibition NV formation [10][11][12]. Several clinical trials are currently evaluating the role of anti-VEGF agents for the treatment of retinal NV in diabetic patients with encouraging preliminary results [13][14][15].…”

“…This beneficial effect might be due to substantial activation of well-known antiinflammatory/antiangiogenic pathways [21][22][23]. Repeated intravitreal high-dosage injections of 20 mg IVT have been shown to be safe, and no tachyphylaxis has been detected in a comparative study [24].…”
