Abstract: Cigarette smoking is an established cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Numerous studies implicate acrolein, which occurs in relatively high concentrations in cigarette smoke and reacts readily with proteins, as one causative factor for COPD in smokers.
