Levels of Sulfur as an Essential Nutrient Element in the Soil-Crop-Food System in Austria

Abstract: Total sulfur data of various agricultural and food items from the lab of the author, have been compiled to develop an understanding of sulfur levels and ecological cycling in Austria. As sulfur level is not an included factor among the quality criteria of soil and fertilizer composition, the database is rather small. Problems in analytical determinations of total sulfur, in particular digestions, are outlined. As a protein component, sulfur is enriched in matrices of animal origin, in particular in egg white. … Show more

“…Its high content is expected since this element plays an important role in biosynthesis of amino acids, proteins and some vitamins. Deficiency could lead to abnormal growth of some parts of plants or to the discoloration of tissues . In the human body it is the third most abundant element and it is essential for animals and humans, since only plants and bacteria can synthesize organic S compounds .…”

“…Sulfur additions through fertilisers and organic manures varied according to their composition (Sager 2012). Amendment of soil with biosolids, manures, and composts will generally increase available sulfur.…”
