Levels of Heavy Metals in and Around Scrap Car Dumpsite at Uwelu, Nigeria

Abstract: Soil contaminated with heavy metals can result to very serious environmental hazard. As a result of this problem, this research was carried out to investigate the concentration of heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cr) in and around Uwelu scrap car dumpsite in Benin City, southern Nigeria. In carrying out this research, a total of 36 soil samples were taken for laboratory analysis. The soil samples were collected at various depths at the dumpsite, and at various horizontal distances from the dumpsite including h… Show more

“…This is expected, as increasing distance from the scrapyard means decreasing heavy metals concentrations, which are mostly alkaline. This nding is comparable to a study by [34] where the pH at a dumpsite decreased from 5.9 to 4.7 at a distance of 18 m from the dumpsite.…”

“…Comparably, Cr, Cu, and Pb concentrations were several times higher within the scrapyard than outside. This decreasing concentration of heavy metals with increasing distances from the scrapyard agrees with other studies, which explored the effect of increasing distance from the source on concentration levels of heavy metals [47][48][49].…”

“…Waste is rejected materials from a manufacturing process that is useful to another process (Seah et al, 2023). Automobile junks are waste products from an auto-mechanic shop (Aisien et al, 2013;Jody et al, 2023). The junk comprises body parts of accident cars as well as the accessories that come from the internal parts of cars (Zhang & Chen, 2018).…”
