Identification of persistent and emerging organic contaminants in green mussels (Perna viridis), various fishes, banana shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) and sediment samples from Jakarta Bay has been employed. A non-target GC-MS screening approach has identified more than 60 individual organic compounds from the whole fractions either non-polar, semi-polar or acidic-polar compounds. The substances comprised as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including DDT (dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane) and its metabolites as well as high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HMW-PAHs). Noteworthy, a number of emerging contaminants detected in the present study have never been reported previously either from the same location or from Asian waters. They include some priority contaminants of non-persistence halogens and emission of technical products, such as di-isopropylnaphthalenes (DIPNs) dichlorobenzene (DCB), dichlorodiphenyl chloroethene (DDMU) and phenylmethoxynaphthalene (PMN). In general, the concentration order of the priority organic contaminants was sediment > green mussel > fishes > shrimp. Further analysis based on the spatial distribution, individual concentrations and bioavailability suggested that some contaminants are applicable as molecular marker for the assessment of anthropogenic emission in Jakarta Bay, i.e. DIPNs, linear alkylbenzenes (LABs), phenylmethoxynaphthalene (PMN), PAHs, dichlorobenzene, DDT and its metabolites.

Pesticide residues in fish from the Densu River Basin in Ghana

The Densu River is a typical river flowing through agricultural areas in Southern Ghana. Six fish species from different locations in the river were sampled and analyzed for residues of pesticides and metabolites using GC with ECD/FID. The results of the study indicate that all the detected residues and metabolites in fish samples from the Densu River Basin were organochlorines (OCs). Among the pesticides residues analyzed, DDE, α-endosulfan, γ-HCH, δ-HCH, heptachlor and endosulfan sulphate, were predominant in all the samples. About 50% of the samples recorded positive detection of DDE while α-endosulfan was detected in 60% of the samples. γ-HCH, δ-HCH were detected in 75% and 65% of the samples respectively with heptachlor occurring in 80% of the samples. In almost all the fish species analyzed, DDE was the predominant compound having a mean value of 7.99 µgKg -1 . Higher concentrations of pesticide residues were detected in fish samples from the Densu River at Nsawam than the other locations. The total concentration of residues in the fish samples ranged between 0.49 µgKg -1 and 8.90 µgKg -1 with the highest level detected in Hepsetue odoe (HO-N). The sequence of pesticide residues detected in fish samples were HO-N > HN-N > CO-N > CG-N > TZ-N > CN-W > TZ-W > CG-W. The high ratio of DDE/DDT in fish samples (0.1 -6.9 with a mean of 2.51) indicated probably old input of DDT and significant degradation. The γ -HCH isomer (lindane) was the dominant HCH in fish samples suggesting a preferential usage of lindane (purified γ-HCH) in these areas. The δ-HCH/γ-HCH ratios in most fish samples were low indicating the present input of the pesticide lindane from non-point sources.

Pengukuran kadar pestisida organochlorin dalam kerang hijau (Perna viridis) dilakukan pada bulan Maret dan Mei 2013. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui tingkat bioakumulasi pestisida organochlorin dalam kerang hijau (Perna viridis) yang dibudidaya di Teluk Jakarta. Contoh kerang hijau diambil dari Teluk Jakarta pada bulan Maret dan Mei 2013. Kadar pestisida organochlorin diukur dengan alat kromatografi gas HP 5890 series II. Hasil pengukuran menunjukkan kadar rerata pestisida organochlorin dalam kerang hijau ukuran kecil adalah 12,842 ppb, dalam kerang ukuran sedang adalah 27,065 ppb, dan dalam kerang ukuran besar adalah 108,646 ppb. Kadar ini lebih rendah bila dibandingkan dengan nilai ambang batas aman untuk makanan hasil laut yang ditetapkan oleh EPA yakni 1500 ppb. Perbandingan antara kadar pestisida organochlorin dalam kerang hijau dengan pestisida organochlorin dalam air laut (faktor bioakumulasi) berturut adalah 2.140 untuk kerang ukuran kecil, 4.510 untuk kerang ukuran sedang, dan 18.107 untuk kerang ukuran besar.
