Level of plasma thioredoxin in male patients with manic episode at initial and post‐electroconvulsive or antipsychotic treatment

Abstract: Aim: Oxidative stress is defined as exposure to excessive oxidants and/or decrease in antioxidant capacity. Several studies have shown the effects of free radicals and antioxidant defense systems in bipolar disorder. We aimed to investigate the role of thioredoxin (TRX), which is a novel oxidative stress marker in patients with bipolar disorder. Methods: Sixty-eight hospitalized bipolar patients who were in manic episode were included in the study. As a control group, 30 healthy people were elected. Two groups … Show more

“…After ECT treatment, thioredoxin levels in the mania group further reduced significantly in this study. 35 Albumin is the most abundant protein and its last 5 amino acids of the chain might be modified by chemical stress including oxidative stress. Atagun et al 36 evaluated the levels of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) in patients with depression (n = 23) and healthy individuals (n = 21).…”

“…Genetic polymorphism was examined, including serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR), norepinephrine transporter (NET182C), COMT (Val158Met), DRD2 (C957T), and ApoE (35,36). The association of plasma biomarker levels and treatment response was explored, such as brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) levels (34,37), nerve growth factor (NGF) (38), and plasma thioredoxin levels (39). A meta-analysis has indicated that serum BDNF increased after ECT but had no correlation with improvement in depressive symptoms (40).…”

“…Oksidatif stresin bir takım nöropsikiyatrik bozuklukların nöropatolojik süreçlerine aracılık ettiği düşünülmektedir12. Şizofreni iki uçlu bozukluk, majör depresyon, anksiyete bozuklukları gibi psikiyatrik bozukluklardaki oksidatif metabolizma dengesizliklerine dair bilimsel kanıtlar birikmektedir [12][13][14] .…”
