Level of advanced oxidation protein products is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis

Abstract: Background Oxidative stress is an important factor in the pathomechanism of atherosclerosis. Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) are considered markers of oxidative stress. Thickening of the carotid intima-media layers indicates subclinical atherosclerosis and can be detected by carotid ultrasound. Objective Our aim was to examine the association between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the level of AOPPs. … Show more

“…Finally, 30 μL glacial acetic acid (Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany) was added to all wells. Afterwards, the plate was centrifuged at 2934× g (in contrast to 5800× g in [ 30 ]) for 5 min, and 230 μL precipitated-protein-free supernatant was transferred to the free wells of the same 96-well microtiter plate (in contrast to transferring onto new plate in [ 30 ]). The absorbance was determined at 340 nm using Epoch TM (Bio-Tek Instruments GmbH, Bad Friedrichshall, Germany).…”

“…[15][16][17] In fact, biomarkers such as advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been shown to be directly involved in atherosclerotic plaque development and/or endothelial dysfunction. [18][19][20] As such, markers of oxidative stress and inflammation may serve as key indicators to cardiometabolic health and should be used in conjunction with the aforementioned markers to better gauge CVD risk. [21][22][23][24] Although some studies have aimed to improve aspects of cardiometabolic health among firefighters by improving antioxidant status and reducing oxidative stress susceptibility, 8,25 more data are needed regarding the impact of CRF on these biomarkers in the firefighter community.…”

“…Chronic exposure to oxidative stress and inflammation has been widely recognized as predominate mechanisms contributing to manifestations associated with cardiometabolic dysfunction, such as atherosclerosis and insulin resistance 15–17 . In fact, biomarkers such as advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been shown to be directly involved in atherosclerotic plaque development and/or endothelial dysfunction 18–20 . As such, markers of oxidative stress and inflammation may serve as key indicators to cardiometabolic health and should be used in conjunction with the aforementioned markers to better gauge CVD risk 21–24 .…”

“…AOPPs are usually formed from albumins and methionine- or tyrosine-rich polypeptides as a consequence of ROS attacks [ 15 ]. The elevated levels of AOPPs found by some researchers were related to ageing, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Moreover, the involvement of oxidative stress on proteins has been also found in COVID-19 pneumonia patients [ 20 ].…”
