Level, Causes and Risk Factors of Neonatal Mortality, in Jordan: Results of a National Prospective Study

Abstract: The present study showed the level, causes, and risk factors of NNM in Jordan. It showed also that a large proportion of NNDs are preventable or possibly preventable. Providing optimal intrapartum, and immediate postpartum care is likely to result in avoidance of a large proportion of NNDs.

“…Studies investigating the health outcomes of those neonates from the Arab countries are scarce [1][2][3], with none being from Jordan. VLBWI represent 1.4% of total live births in Jordan [4]. Despite all of the efforts to improve neonatal care by national and international organizations, the neonatal mortality rate in Jordan is still high (14.8/1000 live births) [4] and 50% of those mortalities are in VLBWI [4].…”

“…The observational study design may lead to bias by indication and it is, therefore, not possible to prove causality. Male gender is associated with a higher neonatal morbidity and mortality hence boys will probably have more or other types of catheters placed which may lead to a higher CLABSI incidence (29, 30). …”

“…In Jordan, the neonatal mortality rate is estimated to be 14 per 1000 births (Department of Statistics [Jordan] and ICF International ), with RDS being the leading cause (53.5%; Batieha et al. ). According to Batieha et al.…”

“…According to Batieha et al. (), 75% of neonatal deaths can be prevented by providing proper medical care during delivery and the immediate post‐partum period. Unfortunately, about 60% of neonatal deaths are attributable to poor medical care (Batieha et al.…”
