Leukocyte Telomere Length in Healthy Caucasian and African-American Adolescents: Relationships with Race, Sex, Adiposity, Adipokines, and Physical Activity

Abstract: Objectives-To examine the relations of race, sex, adiposity, adipokines and physical activity to telomere length in adolescents.Study design-Leukocyte telomere length (T/S ratio) was assessed cross-sectionally in 667 adolescents (aged 14-18 years, 48% blacks, 51% girls) using a quantitative PCR method. Generalized Estimating Equations analyses were performed.Results-Black adolescents had longer telomeres than white adolescents (age and sex adjusted T/S ratio ± SE: 1.32 ± 0.01 vs. 1.27 ± 0.01, p=0.014) and girl… Show more

“…Several studies have found longer LTLs among blacks than whites (Hunt et al, 2008;Fitzpatrick et al, 2011;Hofmann et al, 2011;Zhu et al, 2011). The LTL difference declines and may even reverse with aging.…”

“…While it is established that LTL shortens with age (4), results from studies investigating the association of LTL with health outcomes as well as lifestyle-related factors, such as smoking, obesity, physical activity and stress, have not been as definite (36)(37)(38)(39). Most of the studies hypothesised that lifestyle and environmental factors that lead to heightened oxidative stress would lead to higher telomere attrition rates, hence shortened LTL, which would impair survival in the long run (40).…”

“…Up to now, six studies have been published on the relation between RTL and leptin with sample sizes varying from 317 to 2,721 subjects [15][16][17][18][19][20]. An inverse association was found in two studies [15,19] while two did not find evidence for a significant association [16,20]. One study found borderline significant evidence for a positive association [17].…”
