“…The majority of talk programmes are concrete examples of 'the externalization of inner life' (Habermas 1989: 159) whereby listeners reveal aspects of their private life while participating in activities such as requesting songs and sending greetings to other listeners. Many of these examples can be considered as instances of 'phatic performance', a concept Ben Arps (2003) has linked to the sending of personal messages on air in Banyuwangi, East Java. Arps rightly argues that this type of activity serves important social goals and is less trivial than it may seem as it enables interaction between radio listeners, provides the participants with the pleasure of being heard or overheard, and creates or confirms social networks.…”

Media komunikasi dan informasi semakin kompleks seiring berkembangnya zaman. Namun, ada satu media elektronik yang tidak pernah pudar dari sejarah terutama pada sejarah kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia. Radio sebagai alat komunikasi mampu berperan dalam mendongkrak kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia masa itu. Tulisan ini menggunakan metode penelitian deskriptif, dengan teknik pengumpulan data kepustakaan dan dokumentasi dengan melibatkan penelitian sejarah sebagai pendukungnya. Penulis memperoleh informasi dan data secara mendalam melalui literatur sejarah, buku, jurnal, serta media yang mendukung untuk mendapatkan landasan teori mengenai radio sebagai media komunikasi pemerintah dan masyarakat. Berdasarkan catatan sejarah, proklamasi diumumkan pada tanggal 17 Agustus tahun 1945 melalui siaran stasiun radio pemerintah Jepang Hoso Kyoku, Yusuf Ronodipuro yang dikenal sebagai pendiri Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) mengumumkan kemerdekaan bangsa Indonesia sebagai bangsa yang bebas seutuhnya dari segala penindasan dan penguasaan bangsa asing. Penulis mendapati perkembangan radio setelah kemerdekaan dimulai saat lahirnya RRI pada tanggal 11 September 1945, hingga saat ini tercatat sekitar 53 lebih jenis stasiun radio di Indonesia yang tersebar ke seluruh wilayah Indonesia. Masing-masing stasiun siaran tersebut memiliki Output nya tersediri sebagai ciri khas hingga dapat dinikmati berbagai kalangan. Kerap kali radio di jadikan media penyampaian aspirasi masyarakat kepada pemerintah melalui program-program podcast, talkshow, dsb. Radio juga membantu pemerintah dalam memberikan informasi penting kepada masyarakat terkait kebijakan-kebijakan maupun himbauan terutama di daerah-daerah terisolir yang memiliki keterbatasan akses internet dan listrik. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa radio turut mewarnai dunia perpolitikan di Indonesia, sehingga menjadi salah satu media political communicator bagi pemerintah dan rakyat.

On the basis of the theoretical notions of discursive ambience and ambient discourse, this article examines the recent history of language and ethnicity in Banyuwangi in the far east of Java. Over the last three decades (with roots going back to the 1920s and earlier) a redefinition of the language and culture of the "autochthonous" inhabitants of Banyuwangi has been occurring. Their status and constitution have been changing from a variety of Javanese into an autonomous language and ethnicity, called, after the name given to the language or dialect, Osing. At the same time, an idyllic and heroic picture of the regional past is being constructed and maintained. Prominent among the factors and agencies involved in these two ongoing processes is popular media culture. The regency of Banyuwangi and especially its capital (also named Banyuwangi) are being cast -albeit sporadically and incidentally and sometimes controversially -as an Osing region. At the centre of this historical process, people publicly render themselves -also sporadically and temporarily -Banyuwanginese by listening to and especially by singing, in karaoke-style, a genre of pop music with Osing lyrics and musical characteristics perceived as local.
