later. The suture was discarded by the operating room personnel.Case 2. A 61-year-old man underwent right CEA for high-grade stenosis. Closure of the arteriotomy was with 5-0 Prolene suture using a saphenous vein patch beginning at the distal apex and continuing laterally around the proximal apex and tied on the medial aspect. On the fourth postoperative day while at home he experienced massive bleeding that was contained by paramedics. At urgent surgery the suture was found disrupted on the lateral side. The intact suture was on the medial side. The patient recovered uneventfully after the artery was primarily closed. Analysis of the suture by its manufacturer was unremarkable.
