Letter: HLA antigens in haemochromatosis.

Abstract: proportion of women experiencing intercourse and the proportion of sexually active women who used contraceptives were greater than those found in Britain and America." In an unpublished survey of both university (undergraduate) and non-university (for example, secretarial) students in Cambridge in 1973 we found the proportion of sexually experienced women in both groups (570/) to be close to that of the Australian sample (62%'). On the other hand, Dr Cole's data on the relationship of age to sexual experience … Show more

“…Similarly, we tbund an excess of HLA-B7. The association of HLA-B7 with IH appears to show geographical differences [7][8][9]13]. However, the increased frequency observed in our patients is in agreement with most reports [7,8,13].…”

“…11 From population studies involving numerous countries, it has been calculated that the overall frequency of the gene allele for C282Y mutation in North America and northern Europe is 6.8% and for H63D mutation is 17.6%. 9,[23][24][25][26][27] Currently, the most practical and cost effective method for screening of HH is done by first phenotypic screening by means of TS or unbound iron binding capacity (UIBC) measurement followed by genotypic screening. Unlike the H63D mutation, which is widely distributed throughout the world (see Table 1), the C282Y mutation is more frequent in the populations with Caucasian origin.…”

“…This parameter shows that iron treatment, especially parenteral replacement, may indeed be hazardous [4,5,7,9,11]. An iron-overload associated myopathy was noted in patients on HD [14], related to high SF and to the presence of the antigens associated with idiopathic haemochromatosis, HLA A3, B7, and B14(HA) [15][16][17][18][19], It is the aim of this paper to study the relationship be tween SF, HA and the effect of iron administration via blood transfusions.…”
