Lethal trap trees: a potential option for emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) management

Abstract: Girdling ash trees to attract adult EAB did not reduce efficacy of emamectin benzoate trunk injections applied ≥ 18 days earlier and could potentially be used in integrated management programs to slow EAB population growth.

“…Girdled trees provide a potential means to retain or pull beetles to a specific area, providing managers with an opportunity to focus treatments such as application of systemic insecticides, which are an economically viable option in urban and residential areas Mercader 2012, Kovacs et al 2014). Creating lethal trap trees by girdling ash previously injected with a systemic insecticide or intermixing insecticide-treated trees with girdled trees could perhaps increase the number of EAB exposed to the insecticide, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the treatments (McCullough et al 2015a(McCullough et al , 2015b. Given the economic and ecological impacts of EAB observed in North America to date, effective management of this invader will require further studies to increase our understanding of factors affecting EAB behavior, spread and population dynamics.…”

“…In areas already invaded, some Tribal Nations are trunkinjecting a highly effective systemic insecticide (eg emamectin benzoate; Herms and McCullough 2014) into a few mature black ash trees to retain seed sources. Opportunities exist for combining this insecticide with girdling to create highly attractive but lethal EAB trap trees (McCullough et al 2016). Such practices could benefit individual stands, while a comprehensive, area-wide approach (Mercader et al 2015) could reduce EAB impacts on ecological processes and conserve black ash genetics at a broader scale, perhaps eventually providing opportunities for limited harvest by Indigenous basketmakers.…”

“…Since most of its life cycle is hidden under the bark of host and only appears outside the bark about 1 month during the adult stage, it is difficult to be controlled (Wang et al, 2010). Currently, physical (Crook et al, 2009;Poland and Mccullough, 2014;Ryall et al, 2015), chemical (Nicole et al, 2010;Mccullough et al, 2016;Poland et al, 2016) and biological (Duan et al, 2020) methods are mainly used to control A. planipennis. All these methods are useful, but there are still some shortcomings.…”
