Let’s talk SUDEP

Abstract: Sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a devastating complication of epilepsy which was under-recognized in the recent past despite its clear importance. In this review, we examine the definition of SUDEP, revise current pathophysiological theories, discuss risk factors and preventative measures, disclose tools for appraising the SUDEP risk, and last but not least dwell upon announcing and explaining the SUDEP risk to the patients and their caretakers. We aim to aid the clinicians in their responsibil… Show more

“…SUDEP has been identified as one of the most frequent causes of death among patients with epilepsy. However, most of the cases are highly unrecognized and underreported as 90% of SUDEP cases are unwitnessed [ 12 ]. Therefore, the underlying pathophysiology remains incompletely understood.…”

“…12 Seizure is such a multi-system event that it has impact on overall physiology of the body and if this phenomenon keeps on occurring and remains unchecked may cause threatening complications. 5 Antiepileptic drug's though play a vital role in control of epilepsy, yet have certain adverse effects which may need to be kept in mind as these medications may have to be administered for years. Newer anti-epileptics lack data on safety aspects therefore careful monitoring should be carried out regularly if patient is on any newer drug.…”

“…Respiratory problems, abnormal rhythm of heart, and altered cerebral blood flow have been some of the causes which were found on postmortem examinations and related to SUDEP among patients of epilepsy. 5,6 Still a lot of work has been under progress to find the exact cause or factors related to SUDEP in order to prevent this lethal condition.…”
