“…According to the descriptive findings reported in Table and against our hypothesis, couples opting for the separation of property were indeed more widespread among religious (74.8%) than among civil marriages (68.7%). Our empirical analyses support the findings in Ruiu and Breschi (), who emphasized a disconnection between religious marriages and the choice of community of property among marriages celebrated in Italy in the late 2010s. One explanation for our different finding is that this article focuses on first marriages celebrated in 2015.…”

The high prevalence of couples choosing the separation of property can be partly explained by the regulation that couples at marriage are asked to decide between two matrimonial property regimes without signing a costly prenuptial contract (Fraboni & Vitali, 2019 ; Ruiu & Breschi, 2017 ).…”

“…Furthermore, self-employed individuals may aim to avoid economic conflicts by keeping wealth separately (Fraboni & Vitali, 2019 ; Ruiu & Breschi, 2017 ). On the one hand, self-employed individuals may protect business assets from their spouses through a marital contract (Frémeaux & Leturcq, 2018 ).…”
