Let's Encrypt

Abstract: Let's Encrypt is a free, open, and automated HTTPS certificate authority (CA) created to advance HTTPS adoption to the entire Web. Since its launch in late 2015, Let's Encrypt has grown to become the world's largest HTTPS CA, accounting for more currently valid certificates than all other browser-trusted CAs combined. By January 2019, it had issued over 538 million certificates for 223 million domain names. We describe how we built Let's Encrypt, including the architecture of the CA software system (Boulder) a… Show more

“…The security of HTTPS is achieved by public certificates, which certify the authenticity of the server connection and are typically obtained from certification authorities. In this project, Let us Encrypt, a non-profit authority that offers free certificates within established limits, is proposed to be used for obtaining certificates [37]. To obtain and renew certificates from this authority, it is highly advisable to utilize Certbot, a specialized tool.…”

“…It is also necessary to specify the relevant certificates for the use of the HTTPS protocol, or alternatively we can rely on other containers that deal with the automatic generation of certificates, such as those developed by EFF Let's Encrypt [ 36 ]. In the back-end section we will establish the algorithm for balancing requests to web servers.…”

“…To use SSL certificates in pfSense, we used the ACME package. This software interfaces with Let's Encrypt [25] (using the ACME protocol [26]) to handle the certificate generation, validation, and renewal processes. Certificates from Let's Encrypt are domain validated.…”
