“…The sex and ontogenetic stage of each individual was determined according to the development of secondary sexual characteristics (Bury & Whelan, ). Only adults were considered because juveniles rarely feed on amphibians (Bissattini & Vignoli, ; Bury & Whelan, ).…”

“…Thus, to verify the feeding strategy pattern emerging from the fieldwork, a systematic worldwide literature review on the American bullfrog diet was performed. The selection of papers for the re‐analysis followed the procedure described by Bissattini and Vignoli (): google scholar was searched for scientific peer‐reviewed papers on the American bullfrog feeding niche by selecting the following keywords: ‘American bullfrog/ Rana catesbeiana / Lithobates catesbeianus ’, ‘diet’, ‘trophic niche’, and ‘feeding ecology’. Studies were checked for relevance using the following two eligibility criteria: reporting raw data on each prey type in the form of a table or a graph (Vignoli et al, ; Vignoli & Luiselli, ) and examining American bullfrogs collected in the field (no captive experiments included).…”

“…A primary producer was chosen rather than a primary consumer (e.g., molluscs) due to the lower variability of stable isotope values in plants (Bissattini, & Vignoli, 2017 ;McClelland, Valiela, & Michener, 1997) δ 15 N and δ 15 C ranges (NR and CR) as well as the mean distance to the centroid (CD) are measurements of the extent of the δ 15 N/ δ 15 C bi-plot, reflecting the community niche width. While Layman's metrics are usually employed in community-wide analyses, they can be used to compare species present within one ecosystem without consideration of the entire species community (Bissattini, & Vignoli, 2017;Jackson et al, 2011;Layman, 2007). “…Kyoto; Hirai ; California, Hothem, Meckstroth, Wegner, Jennings, & Crayon, ; Zhoushan; Wu, Li, Wang, & Adams, ). A recent analysis found a narrower trophic niche for bullfrogs in invaded ranges due to their massive predation on the introduced crayfish P. clarkii (Bissattini & Vignoli, ), which may mitigate (i.e. have an antagonistic effect on) bullfrog predation on native anurans (Figure c).…”
