Let’s All Go to the Movies, Together: A Social Cognitive Perspective on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Management Education Video Clips

Abstract: While video clips have undoubtedly advanced the practice of management education, social cognitive theory suggests that new sources of video clips may augment ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) efforts in management classrooms and organizations. “…Many scholars have written about the efficacy of using film in management education (e.g., Letiche & Moriceau, 2019;Smith, 2009). Generally, when film is incorporated in management courses, it is in the form of film clips that are carefully selected to succinctly illustrate a specific topic, such as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), toxic leadership, or cross-cultural issues (e.g., Edwards et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2022;Pandey, 2012). We join with others who have called for films to be included as key course texts, and considered in their entirety, as this is especially useful for probing complicated and nuanced topics (e.g., Huczynski & Buchanan, 2004;Smith, 2009); by considering how film can be used in a course on contemporary careers, our approach extends and complements theirs in three key ways.…”
