The Collaborative Design Environment (CoDE) is a dedicated collaborative design facility aimed at enhancing design team communication by supporting collocated system and discipline experts with analysis tools, design applications and various technologies. A generalized model of collaborative design offering flexibility and concurrently addressing the environment and the process as complementary counterparts is proposed. A detailed process was constructed by strategically aligning pertinent models of collaborative design from a variety of fields. The process clearly describes how technological affordances in the CoDE can be used to address the collaborative design challenges and leverage its advantages. This process was successfully implemented by a team of undergraduate aerospace engineering students participating in the 2006 AIAA aircraft design competition. The process, the environment and the generalized model serving as a flexible reference frame constitute a framework for collaborative design.

This study investigates software process engineering boosted with software process modelling and computer based support for it. The research question discussed is how to support process understanding, guidance and process model utilisation with a selected design environment. We study the research question by conducting a process improvement experiment in an industrial software development environment in Nokia. In practice, the experiment reported includes an introduction of Teleconi Design Environment (TDE) and customisation of it for the local needs of NMPJSP at Jyvaskyla site. TDE is a Nokia in-house tool, which provides multi-user modelling capabilities and integrates both process modelling and production support. The TDE customisation discussed in this paper is focused in the development of process templates and associated on-line guidance, The effect of TDE adoption is evaluated against the current process support as well as against the feedback received from software designers participating in customisation. BackgroundThis paper reports a study investigating the customisation of a design environment to support effectively software development at NMP/SP at Jyvaskyla site (later SP Jyvaskyla).
