Sustainable sourcing strategy for mega construction projects: An empirical analysis

Time and cost overruns are the prominent issues faced by mega construction projects. To minimize cost overruns for the projects, a stepwise approach is suggested for the formulation of a sustainable sourcing strategy. Initially, weights are derived for the existing suppliers using the analytic hierarchy process to select the best set of suppliers. Multiple conflicting variables are considered for deriving the weights. Based on the derived weights, the supply network cost optimization model is developed for optimal order quantity allocation to the selected suppliers to maximize total purchasing value (TPV). A multi‐objective weighted goal programming model is used to minimize deviations in the TPV. Finally, the full factorial design of the experiment concept is employed to identify the significant factors impacting deviations in TPV. The methodology developed is verified using a case study approach. Mega‐construction project organization case was considered for analysis. Demand for the product, materials procurement cost, quality, and supplier lead time are found to be the significant factors impacting deviations in TPV. The developed approach can provide valuable insights to practitioners for the formulation of a sustainable sourcing strategy.

PurposeThere is a large amount of published literature on project management. However, there exists a gap between the existing literature and current practices in the industry for the development and execution of megaprojects. Existing literature generally focuses on individual elements applicable to project management in general. This article aims to provide an overview of the project management system components used in industrial megaprojects and identify the gaps between theory and practice, which can be used as input for further research on the topic.Design/methodology/approachThe topic of megaproject management is reviewed based on available literature sources on megaproject management systems to identify the main gaps in the literature between theory and practice. Based on the findings, an analysis is provided to discuss the improvements required in distinct project management areas and phases.FindingsThere are multiple gaps associated with issues, failures, successes and challenges in industrial megaprojects. Improvements are needed in distinct management areas and over the entire project lifetime. Further guidelines are required for achieving improved megaproject management systems. Such concepts could benefit researchers and practitioners in streamlining their research toward the most relevant and critical areas of improvement of megaproject management systems.Originality/valueThis study addresses the literature gaps between theory and practices on megaproject management systems with an overview that provides helpful guidance for industrial applications and future research. A holistic analysis identifies gaps and critical drives in the body of knowledge, revealing avenues for future research focused on quality as the central pillar that affects the entire megaproject management system.

Predicting the Cost Outcome of Construction Quality Problems Using Case-Based Reasoning (CBR)

Quality problems are crucial in construction projects since poor quality might lead to delays, low productivity, and cost overruns. In case preventive actions are absent, a lack of quality results in a chain of problems. As a solution, this study deals with non-conformities proactively by adopting an AI-based predictive model approach. The main objective of this study is to provide an automated solution structured on the data recording system for the adverse impacts of construction quality failures. For this purpose, we collected 2527 non-conformance reports from 59 diverse construction projects to develop a predictive model regarding the cost impact of the quality problems. The first of three stages forming the backbone of the study determines crucial attributes linked to quality problems through a literature survey and the Delphi method. Secondly, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) were used to determine the attribute weights. In the final stage, we developed models to predict the cost impacts of non-conformities, using Case-based Reasoning (CBR). We made a comparison between the developed models to select the most precise one. The results show that the performance of CBR-GA using an automated weighting model is slightly better than CBR-AHP based on a subjective weighting system, whereas the case is the opposite in standard deviation in forecasting the cost outcome of the quality failures. Using both automated and expert systems, the study forecasts the cost impact of failures and reveals the factors linked to poor record-keeping. Ultimately, we concluded that the outcome of non-conformities can be predicted and prevented using past events via the developed AI-based predictive model.
