Lesson Learned in the Growth and Maturation Stages of a Community Pharmacy Practice-Based Research Network: Experiences of the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana (Rx-SafeNet)

Abstract: Community pharmacy practice-based research networks (CP PBRNs) are a relatively new arena for pharmacists. While some lessons may be gleaned from primary care PBRNs, the experiences of CP PBRNs have much to offer the profession in terms of organization and practice. In 2012, we reported on our early experiences developing the Medication Safety Research Network of Indiana (RxSafeNet) after establishing the Network in 2010. Over the past 3 years, our CP PBRN of approximately 180 members has managed further growt… Show more

“…The characteristics of the potential PBRN membership in Table 1 highlights the potential to overcome some challenges referenced in previously developed PBRNs. 10 Mainly, the high rate of institutional IRBs in addition to experience with IRBs by the membership may help facilitate timely research productivity. Although there is a Southern United States predominance, there were respondents willing to join the PBRN from across the nation and in other countries.…”

“…9 A common challenge cited by others who created PBRNs is increasing membership and engaging and sustaining membership. 10 Characteristics associated with willingness to join a PBRN would be of benefit when developing the PPAG PBRN to target future membership increases and ensure membership engagement.…”

“…Despite PPBRs' importance in generating knowledge resulting in better outcomes for patients, health systems and society alike, common challenges persist. Notably, inadequate financial support stunts PPBR by reducing the time and resources needed by clinicians and researchers to participate in study activities [3,4]. Moreover, PPBR scientists often encounter primary data collection challenges due to unique data needs and data access/ownership issues.…”
