To increase the void volume of catalyst layer, some researchers have tried to use functionalized carbon supports with proton conductive groups, such as sulfonated polymers and reduce the required Nafion ionomer ; but this approach is not a mature method and use of Nafion ionomer leads to higher performance at this time.
