Less COVID-19 deaths in southern and insular Italy explained by forest bathing, Mediterranean environment, and antiviral plant volatile organic compounds

Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is causing major sanitary and socioeconomic issues, yet some locations are less impacted than others. While densely populated areas are likely to favor viral transmission, we hypothesize that other environmental factors could explain lower cases in some areas. We studied COVID-19 impact and population statistics in highly forested Mediterranean Italian regions versus some northern regions where the amount of trees per capita is much lower. We also evaluated the affinity … Show more

“…Therefore, it is very important for the university management to be able to detect problematic usage early to avoid potential future problems [61]. Preventive measures for both physical and mental health include: self-regulating screen time by limiting and balancing screen and internet time for important matters (education and searching information), preventing aimless browsing of the internet, establishing routine by turning off notifications during physical activities, enhancing and empowering physical activities either indoors or outdoors such as forest-bathing, strolling and jungle trekking (once permitted), managing stress sufficiently through a relaxation technique or spiritual technique, regular and adequate sleep, healthy eating and seeking help when needed [62][63][64][65].…”

“…However, the incidence rate of COVID-19, outlined above, does not fully explain the differences in mortality among older adults in different regions. Moreover, the percentage of deaths per population was lower in the greener Mediterranean regions compared to the northern regions with low forest coverage [4]. This evidence can likely be explained by sea proximity, a mild climate, a Mediterranean diet, and the abundance of non-deciduous Mediterranean plants that emit immunomodulatory and antiviral compounds [4].…”

“…However, vaccines are a prophylactic approach and cannot be implemented for treatment, especially in pandemic situations [4]. Furthermore, the search for new therapeutic drugs from safe natural sources is crucial during pandemics [2,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Several naturally existing bioactive compounds were reported to behave as antiviral agents [14][15][16].…”
