Lesions of the Central Nervous System Induced by Intracerebral Inoculation of BALB/c Mice with Rabies Virus (CVS-11)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. BALB/c mice were inoculated intracerebrally with fixed rabies virus (CVS-11) and pathomorphological changes in the central nervous system were studied. Infected mice showed ruffled hair, hunchback, anorexia, emaciation and ataxia at 5 days postinoculation (DPI), but paralysis did not occur. Viral antigens were first detected in the pyramidal cells of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus at 3 DPI, and these cells exhibited apoptosis at 5 DPI. Microglial cells and astroglial cells significantly increase… Show more

“…Also tropism of lyssaviruses for different brain compartments has been shown to be largely strain dependent [4], [26], [27]. The mouse cerebellum did not seem to be an important site of replication for DUVV-NL07, since only few cells stained positive for NP-antigen at all time points analysed after infection.…”

“…The entry of B cells into the RABV infected NS and the local secretion of antibody contribute to the clearance of attenuated RABV from NS (Hooper, Phares, Fabis, & Roy, 2009). It is striking to note that during the course of encephalitic RABV infection B cells are almost undetectable in brain (Camelo, et al, 2000;Kojima et al, 2010), suggesting that restricted entry or specific destruction of migratory B cells could also contribute to RABV virulence.…”
