Immunization with neural derived peptides (INDP), as well as scar removal (SR) and the use of matrices with bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), have been studied separately and proven to induce a functional and morphological improvement after spinal cord injury (SCI). Herein, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of INDP combined with SR and a fibrin glue matrix (FGM) with MSCs (FGM-MSCs), on motor recovery, axonal regeneration-associated molecules and cytokine expression, axonal regeneration (catecholaminergic and serotonergic fibers), and the induction of neurogenesis after a chronic SCI. For this purpose, female adult Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to SCI, 60 days after lesion, rats were randomly distributed in four groups: (1) Rats immunized with complete Freund's adjuvant + PBS (vehicle; PBS-I); (2) Rats with SR+ FGM-MSCs; (3) Rats with SR+ INDP + FGM-MSCs; (4) Rats only with INDP. Afterwards, we evaluated motor recovery using the BBB locomotor test. Sixty days after the therapy, protein expression of TNFα, IL-4, IL-10, BDNF, and GAP-43 were evaluated using ELISA assay. The number of catecholaminergic and serotonergic fibers were also determined. Neurogenesis was evaluated through immunofluorescence. The results show that treatment with INDP alone significantly increased motor recovery, anti-inflammatory cytokines, regeneration-associated molecules, axonal regeneration, and neurogenesis when compared to the rest of the groups. Our findings suggest that the combination therapy (SR + INDP + FGM-MSCs) modifies the non-permissive microenvironment post SCI, but it is not capable of inducing an appropriate axonal regeneration or neurogenesis when compared to the treatment with INDP alone.

Abstract-It is known that the propulsion technique of manual wheelchair it is mechanically inefficient, due to the relationship given by the propulsion force and the distance obtain, and the number of repetitions put the user at risk in developing cumulative trauma compromising joint and tissue. At least 70% of user will suffer secondary injuries because of constant and prolonged used of their manual wheelchair.The users with cervical injury, are exposed in higher physical risk of not getting prescribe technological assistive; due to the fact to the consequences of this type of injuries they present weakness muscles required for the propulsion such as: triceps brachii, middle deltoid, serratus anterior, extensor carpi radial and ulnar extensor carpi, furthermore they have no grip because they have damage at dermatome C6, C7, C8-T1, taking into account that in regular users 50% of the necessary force is lost at the moment they grip the rim to move forward, which represent for this type of user a heavy physical risk that can cause cumulative trauma disorders.We are looking to develop assistive technology for a better propulsion technique that suits their remaining capabilities, empower them and make them self-sufficient as possible. In order to do that, a mechanism that allow us to measure the force in a difference range of motions of the upper limbs and force hands grip has been created, taking into consideration for the final design we are measuring anthropometric dimensions of the Mexican users and their personal records to better satisfy their needs. With all this information we will be able to have a better understanding of the problematic by applying the quantitative and qualitative data in a methodology of design.

Most wheelchair users suffer physical, social and psychological health adverse consequences. In order to cope with these problems, orthosis and prosthesis have been developed in order to assist and provide a better quality life for these people. An active bilateral orthosis can support and induce bipedal locomotion for people with lower limb paralysis. The design and simulation of Cinabo, an active bilateral orthosis based on static and kinematic analysis, a finite element analysis (FEA) and a validation in Matlab to achieve a functional structure, is presented in this work. The main goal is to develop a rehabilitation tool to maintain active remnant bio-structures to keep or restore the lower limbs in healthy conditions through basic movement patterns of bipedal gait and posture modifications. According to the results, the physical model of the active bilateral orthosis will provide the functions needed to solve the important problem of health due to collateral lesions caused by immobility.
