Les zones helleniques internes et leur extension; reflexions sur l'orogenese alpine [with discussion]

Abstract: The inner zones of the Dinaric Alps are particularly well expressed in the Hellenides. Following a description of the specific features of the different zones, beginning with the Macedonian sector where they are best known or most complete, their active role in orogenic mechanisms is discussed. A review of the whole Mediterranean sector of the Alpine system, from Arabia to the western Alps, shows the importance of longitudinal movements in the genesis of the system.

“…Aubouin (1959, 1965), applying the geosyncline theory, proposed the first comprehensive description of the geological evolution of the Hellenic belt: the orogen was divided according to the Mesozoic stratigraphy of the involved terrains into ‘isopic zones’; then the orogenic process allowed the differentiation of the External Hellenides, as the zones affected by deformation during Tertiary time and occupying the western part of the chain, and the Internal Hellenides to the east, which recorded older orogenic deformations since Middle Jurassic time (Brunn, 1960).…”

“…closure basin stage & subduction) known as the Cimmerides orogeny occurs only in the of Lesvos and Chios and possibly also in the Circum Rhodope belt. 2)The late Jurassic -early Cretaceous event, corresponding to the obduction of the Axios/Vardar oceanic basin, is widespread in the so-called internal Hellenides ofBrunn [1960] in continental Greece with sparse outcrops in the Aegean, especially in Crete below the Asteroussia nappe [e.g Bonneau, 1972].
