Goldfish hypothalamic neuroendocrine cells have been investigated with intraceUular recordings. The cells showed resting potentials of 50 mv and action potentials up to 117 mv followed by a long lasting and prominent diphasic hyperpolarizing afterpotential. The action potential occurred in two steps indicating sequential invasion. "Total" neuron (input) resistance was measured to be 3.3 X 107 f~ and total neuron time constant was 42 msec. Orthodromic volleys, produced by olfactory tract stimulation, generated graded excitatory postsynaptic potentials. These neuroendocrine cells seem, therefore, to have electrical membrane properties that are similar to those of other central neurons. Antidromic volleys (pituitary stimulation) produced inhibitory postsynaptic potentials whose latency was only slightly longer than that of the antidromic spike indicating the presence of recurrent collaterals. This finding suggests that the concept of the neuroendocrine cell as a neuron whose axon forms contacts only on blood vessels and not on other neurons or effector cells is too restrictive. Perfusion of the gills with dilute (0.3 per cent) sea water produced an inhibition of spontaneous activity. This inhibition is discussed in relation to recent work which demonstrates that goldfish hypothalamic hormones facilitate Na + influx across the gill membrane.Since their initial description by Ernst Scharrer (44), neurons having the secretory morphology characteristic of gland cells have been identified in the hypothalamus of all classes of vertebrates (34, 45). It is now well established that these neurosecretory cells form an elongated endocrine gland in which their axons serve as a transport channel for hormone that is produced in the soma and released into the blood stream by specialized presynaptic terminals (2,34,35,39). This endocrine function has given rise to the notion that, in their neural properties, hypothalamic as well as all other neuroendocrine cells differ from central neurons in that they end only on capillaries and do not form synaptic junctions with other nerve or effector cells (6,7,10).The purpose of the present study, on the preoptic neuroendocrine cells of the goldfish, is to investigate how these morphological and functional speciali-

Immunohistochemical methods have been used to describe the distribution of neurophysin I- and oxytocin-stained fibers in the spinal cord. In albino rats of either sex, such fibers descend through the dorsal part of the lateral funiculus to the caudal end of the cord. Fibers leave the lateral funiculus to innervate the marginal zone of the dorsal horn at all levels, and the intermediolateral column at thoracic, lumbar and sacral levels. Some fibers course medially through the intermediate gray to end in the central gray, which is innervated at all levels, and also appears to be innervated by fibers descending in the central gray itself. A semiquantitative analysis shows that the density of terminal fields in the intermediolateral column, marginal zone, and central gray varies significantly at different levels. The intermediolateral column is preferentially innervated between T1-T3, T9-T11, and T13-L2. The nucleus intercalatusspinalis and the dorsal commissural nucleus (between T13 and L2), both of which contain preganglionic neurons, are densely innervated. In the monkey (Macaca fascicularis), neurophysin I- and oxytocin-stained fibers descend through the lateral funiculus to the filum terminale, where some of them enter the pia-arachnoid surrounding the filum. The intermediolateral column is not innervated between T1-T3, is sparsely innervated at sacral levels, and is moderately innervated between T4 and L3; the greatest density of fibers occurs at L3. At most levels, few if any fibers are found in the central gray and marginal zone; the central gray is sparsely innervated between T8 and L2 at S2, and between Co3-Co6, and the marginal zone contains a small number of fibers in the region of S2 and Co6. Neurophysin I- and oxytocin-stained fibers were also found in the intermediolateral column, marginal zone, and central gray of homozygous Brattleboro, spontaneously hypertensive, and Egyptian sand rats. The results suggest that the paraventriculo-spinal pathway is particularly related to specific groups of sympathetic and parasympathetic preganglionic neurons, and to the marginal zone, whick is involved in the relay of ascending nociceptive information through the spinothalamic tract.

The distribution of vasotocin in the brain of the lizard Gekko gecko was studied with immunocytochemical methods. Vasotocinergic cells were found in the nucleus supraopticus, the nucleus paraventricularis, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, and in the rhombencephalon. Vasotocinergic fibers were found in the preoptic area, the lateral and ventral hypothalamus, and in many extrahypothalamic brain areas. Furthermore, evidence was obtained of a conspicuous sex difference with regard to vasotocinergic innervation of the lateral septum, the ventrocaudal telencephalon (nucleus sphericus), and the periaqueductal gray; in these areas vastocinergic innervation is much denser in males than in females. The results are discussed in relation to the sexually dimorphic vasopressinergic innervation of the rat brain. It is suggested that the vasotocinergic fiber system in the sexually dimorphic brain areas in Gekko gecko is related to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.
