The inclusion of peace treaty articles between Christian powers in an Ottoman historical work of the late seventeenth century is unquestionably distinctive. The article presents an Ottoman translation of the Treaty of Ryswick (1697) concluded between the French king and the German emperor. This translation is included by the late seventeenth – early eighteenth-century Ottoman historian and palace official Silāḥdār Fındıklılı Meḥmed Aġa in his historical work called ‘The Book of Victory’ (Nuṣretnāme). With this unique text as its basis, the article will first attempt to place the translation in its historical context and explain the possible reasons for its inclusion by Silahdar in his history. Secondly, to morphologically evaluate the text to bring to the fore the translation strategies adopted and to explore the reception and the degree of understanding by the Ottoman side of the basic terms and linguistic topoi of a Christian European peace treaty. And lastly, to analyse the specific interpretation ascribed to the Ryswick agreement by the Ottoman leadership.

Drawing on the correspondence of contemporary rulers and diplomats and on the work of modern European and American historians, this article reinterprets the origins of the War of the Spanish Succession by examining the triangular relationship between Leopold I, Louis XIV and William III during the last quarter of the seventeenth century. It disposes of two ‘myths’: namely that Leopold I and William III were natural allies and that Louis XIV and William III were natural enemies. During the Dutch War and the Nine Years War, relations between the allies William and Leopold were strained for various reasons. And although William regarded Louis XIV as his main rival after the Peace of Nijmegen (1678), at Rijswijk (1697) his relationship with Louis improved significantly. This resulted in two treaties between Louis and William partitioning the Spanish Empire after the death of Carlos II. Leopold I, who took no part in the treaty negotiations, refused to accept the second treaty, which widened the rift between him and the stadholder‐king. As William III refused to force Leopold I to accept the second treaty, Louis XIV accepted Carlos II's will, which left the Spanish inheritance to Philip of Anjou, Louis's grandson. When Louis XIV started to behave like a Spanish king and invaded the Spanish Netherlands, whose independence was the cornerstone of William's foreign policy, a rapprochement between Leopold and William took place, leading to the renewal of their former alliance and the outbreak of the War of the Spanish Succession.

Entre 1670 y 1694, coincidiendo con los generalatos de Oliva, Noyelle y González, la Compañía de Jesús vio amenazada su integridad y autonomía en al menos tres ocasiones. El presente trabajo se configura como una aproximación –desde el punto de vista político y de las relaciones internacionales– a las vicisitudes experimentadas por el gobierno romano de la Compañía, atrapado en la colisión de las dos grandes estrategias hegemónicas de la época: la de la Francia de Luis XIV y la de la Casa de Austria. Potencias católicas que percibían a la Compañía como una importante herramienta a controlar y utilizar en aras de la consecución de sus respectivas conveniencias políticas. Una realidad que hizo a los generales, pero también a otros jesuitas, moverse en un equilibrio inestable que afectaba a cuestiones de gran calado. Como a la obediencia de los hijos de san Ignacio al papa y a su general; a la continua injerencia de los soberanos seculares; a la toma de partido de muchos jesuitas como nacionales de un territorio; o a su opinión en los debates por cuestiones doctrinales que se experimentaban en el seno de la Orden.
