Landscapes combine a physical dimension and intangible aspects related to perception and representation. Agricultural landscapes are the result of a combination of natural (ecological conditions, climate, topography) and agronomic factors (cultivation choices, farming techniques and infrastructure, such as terraces or hydraulic infrastructure), as well as intangible factors (practices, know-how, values). Four example of agricultural landscapes are presented and discussed: landscapes related to a complex irrigation system with historical channels, called bisses, in the canton of Valais, Switzerland; hydraulic infrastructure for water and sediment harvesting – called jessour – in the arid context of Southeast Tunisia; wooded pastures in the Jura karstic mountains in Switzerland; and finally the terraced vineyard of Lavaux (canton of Vaud, Switzerland) inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The description of agricultural and landscape characteristics and the overview of some important management challenges allow proposing four recommendations for the sustainable management of agricultural landscapes: (i) to consider agricultural landscapes as living cultural landscapes, which means that landscape protection needs to go beyond pure conservationist approaches; (ii) to ensure healthy agricultural economy in order to sustainably manage agricultural landscapes; (iii) to consider not only the physical landscape (crops, infrastructure) but also the intangible farming practices and their transmission when speaking of agricultural landscape management; (iv) to adopt systemic approaches including various actors, in particular farmers, to guarantee sustainable management of agricultural landscapes.

Jair Bolsonaro foi eleito presidente, em 2018, com uma plataforma política que combinava beligerância e autoritarismo político, desvalorização de pautas identitárias e de movimentos sociaisde movimentos ecológicos, de luta pela terra e pela moradia, indígenas, quilombolas, LGBTQIA+, de mulheres, negros etc. -, associação mesquinha entre religião cristã e gestão política e pressupostos de um neoliberalismo maleável, cujo intento maior se revelou o rapto e destruição das estruturas organizacionais do Estado, com salvaguarda apenas de investimentos nas Forças Armadas. Neste sentido, a participação ativa das Forças Armadas na administração do Estado brasileiro representou não somente o aumento expressivo do número de militares em postos civis, mas também a ingerência direta em assuntos diversos, como as políticas ambientais, a proteção florestal e a gestão de áreas de preservação. Durante os quatro anos do Governo Bolsonaro, houve a defesa de um modelo de desenvolvimento ilimitado-avassalador, com importantes lideranças políticas promovendo a ideia da natureza como obstáculo ao progresso e saudando a poluição atmosférica, a construção de rodovias em áreas verdes, os agrotóxicos em geral e a dissolução das reservas indígenas. A vinculação do Serviço Florestal Brasileiro e da Agência Nacional de Águas ao Ministério da Agricultura, a extinção da Secretaria de Mudanças Climáticas, a interrupção no reconhecimento de novas terras indígenas e de terras quilombolas e o congelamento da criação de novas unidades de conservação, com o constante enfraquecimento do Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) revelam, entre muitos outros exemplos, destruição da natureza, o avanço das fronteiras da acumulação capitalista sobre a floresta e a opção pela extração violenta em lugar da preservação.

Wooded pastures combine trees and pastures in an integrated land resulting from traditional silvopastoral practices. With their sparse tree cover, wooded pastures are expected to represent an ecotone between open area pastures and forests with potentially high species diversity, although this remains to be tested for animal groups including ground beetles. In this study, we aimed to characterise and compare species communities, diversity indices, biomass and ecological traits of ground beetles in wooded pastures, forests and non-wooded pastures. Pitfall traps were set up in 29 study sites located in the Swiss Jura mountains. Ground beetle communities in wooded pastures largely encompass those in open pastures and forests, although some species are found only in forests or open areas. Wooded pastures and open pastures have an equivalent species diversity level, which is significantly higher than the one in forests. Ground beetle diversity is positively correlated with the existence and surface of Biodiversity Promotion Areas. Areas with high tree cover (70–100%) favour brachypterous and hygrophilic species, whereas areas with reduced tree cover (0–20%) favour xerophilic and winged species. Ground beetles' size and biomass increase with tree cover. Wooded pastures are an important ecotone, ensuring a gradual change of land use systems between open areas and forests, where a wide range of species from both land use systems are found. This semi-natural habitat plays an important function in the conservation of ground beetles.
