“…Despite the prominence accorded them in historical reconstructions and omitting hypothetical textual amendments, these inscriptions as of 2008 number only six, all dedicatory, none of which can be claimed as having been recovered from-or recorded in-its original situation. Three of them are inscribed slabs found in the vicinity of Aksum (RIE 2 at Abba Pantaleon monastery and RIE 3 and 5 at Enda Tcherqos on the Melazzo plateau) while the other three-closely resembling one another-are altar-like incense burners from the highlands of eastern Tigray: RIE 8 from the cache at Addi Galamo (Admassou Shiferaou 1955;Caquot & Drewes 1955) and RIE 9 and 10 preserved in the church at Addi Kaweh near Wukro (Sergew Hable Sellassie 1972: 29, 118;Schneider 1973Schneider , 1976a. These last, it now appears, may originally have been associated with a temple recently discovered at Makeber Gae'wa in the immediate vicinity (Tekle Hagos personal communication; Yohannes Gebre Sellassie personal communication ;Fattovich 2009) and currently undergoing excavation.…”
