“…This comparison between French and Canadian statistical categorizations clearly shows the existence of two different 'systems of insertion', defined by Lefresne (2003) as the sets of laws and institutions that structure young people's access to remunerative relationships in each national context. Examining calendar variables makes it possible to oppose two training-employment schemes: French sequential reasoning, which separates periods of study from periods of employment, contrasts with Canadian combinatory reasoning.…”

“…In analysing normative configurations, we are able to understand the differences in statistical categorization found in both the downstream analysis of results and the upstream production of data. These differences can be understood using the notion of 'system of insertion', defined by Lefresne (2003) as the sets of laws and institutions that structure young people's access to remunerative relationships in each national context. We thus try to show how the systems of surveys reflect different 'systems of insertion' by the way of the two subsets Lefresne (2003) proposes: 'the training-employment scheme' and 'the role young people play in the overall process of mobility in the labour force'.…”

“…As regards youth labour market analysis, we specify at the outset that, although official statistics tend to focus on the 15‐24 age group, there is considerable debate about the pros and cons of various definitions of youth and their consequences in the study of labour market performance and dynamics (see e.g. Lefresne, 2003; O'Higgins, 1997)[3].…”
