Abstract. Les comportements de fécondité des communes des grandes agglomérations varient en fonction de la position géographique. L'exemple des 5 grandes villes suisses et des communes qui les entourent montre des caractéristiques clairement définies, quelle que soit l'agglomération étudiée: une fécondité plus faible dans le centre par rapport à la périphérie, mais en revanche des naissances qui surviennent plus tardivement et plus fréquemment hors mariage. Une discussion sur les facteurs à l'origine de ce schéma met en évidence les rôles respectifs de la mobilite résidentielle accompagnant les changements familiaux d'une part, des caractéristiques socio-économiques des différentes communes de la Suisse d'autre part, et enfin de l'adaptation plus ou moins rapide, en fonction du lieu de résidence, de nouvelles normes familiales. Cette étude se termine par l'observation des conséquences, sur l'évolution démographique et la planification locale, des disparités de fécondité au sein des agglomérations.

Since 1989, fertility in Czechia and Slovakia has undergone a unique and unprecedented transition. This is most evident in the postponement of conception. Some scholars are now referring to this as the postponement transition. Relatively detailed information is available on this transition at the national level, but the regional picture is often neglected. The main objective of this paper is to analyze the spatial differences in the character and rate of fertility after 1989. It also investigates the stability of spatial patterns and any changes that may have occurred owing to the postponement transition. The results show that the nature and trajectory of the fertility postponement transitions in Czechia and Slovakia share some similarities. The main spatial differences in fertility in the two countries relate to the pace and structure of fertility in relation to a woman’s age.

Fertility transition is taking place in all post-communist countries. Not many studies have been conducted at the subnational level to prove the universal nature of this transition or, on the contrary, the diversity of regional trajectories. This study attempts to reveal whether the same explanatory schemes can be applied to fertility transformation mechanisms on a regional as well as a national level. Using a principal component analysis and a cluster analysis, significant spatial differences were found. A rather unique finding is that while there is some convergence in terms of intensity, fertility tempo is a major factor for diversity. This study tries to explain regional differences and, their changes over time. Some economic factors are identified as being important for explaining spatial differences in the fertility quantum and -alongside some cultural factors -in the fertility tempo as well.
