Summary Introduction: Aldose reductase (AR) is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of glucose to sorbitol responsible for the development of diabetic complications like cataracts. Medicinal plants contain several phytocompounds that can inhibit this enzyme. Objective: The purpose of this review is to cite medicinal plants that have been tested for their ability to inhibit aldose reductase and consequently prevent cataracts and classify the major isolated compounds that have this activity. Methods: We reviewed 154 articles published between 1954 and 2020 in English via three databases: ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and PubMed. We have classified the plants that showed a significant anti-cataract effect, in the form of a list including the scientific and family names of each plant. Also, we have cited the IC50 values and the active constituents of each plant that showed inhibitory activity towards AR. Results: We have described 38 herbs belonging to 29 families. Besides, 47 isolated compounds obtained from the cited herbs have shown an AR inhibitory effect: luteolin, luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, apigenin, 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl-epi-quinic acid, delphinidin 3-O-β-galactopyranoside-3’-O-β-glucopyranoside, 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester, andrographolide, 1,2,3,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 1,2,4,6-tetra-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 7-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3-methyl-8-β-O-D-glucoside-2H-chromen-2-one, E-4-(60-hydroxyhex-30-en-1-yl)phenyl propionate, delphinidin 3-O-β-galactopyranoside-3’,5’-di-O-β-glucopyranoside, 1,2,3-tri-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 1,2,6-tri-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)ethanol, (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methanol, trans-anethole, gallic acid 4-O-β-D-(6’-O-galloyl)-glucoside, β-glucogallin, puerariafuran, quercetin, gallic acid 4-O-β-D-glucoside, 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-butanone, protocatechuic acid, trans-cinnamic acid, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid and syringic acid. Conclusion: natural therapy becomes an interesting alternative in the treatment and prevention of cataract by using medicinal plants rich in active compounds considered as AR inhibitors.

La catarata es una opacidad de la lente con intensidad suficiente para reducir la visión. La mayoría de las cataratas se desarrollan lentamente debido al envejecimiento y producen una alteración gradual de la visión. Esta es una de las principales causas de ceguera que se diagnostica al inicio de la atención primaria, por un optometrista en el momento de la consulta. Dentro del análisis, hay evidencia de las causas más comunes de presentación de cataratas causadas por el uso de ciertos medicamentos, que se usa para controlar el tratamiento de algunas enfermedades sistémicas como la diabetes mellitus, enfermedades inmunológicas tales como lupus y artritis reumatoide y enfermedades de tratamiento psiquiátrico tales como depresión. Cuando se realiza una revisión exhaustiva de los efectos secundarios de las drogas sistémicas, a veces puede convertirse en un complejo. El objetivo de este texto es establecer qué drogas corticales inducen las cataratas, además de las drogas más influyentes en la apariencia y el nivel de sus productos. La metodología utilizada en el artículo sobre la revisión y recopilación de información sobre fármacos que influyen en la progresión de las cataratas, en el que, de 70 artículos revisados, se tomaron 20 artículos que hacen referencia a los corticosteroides como fármaco principal en la aparición de cataratas. Los resultados de la investigación coinciden con Liu Dora y su equipo, el investigador afirma que el uso prolongado de corticosteroides puede llevar a cabo una catarata ocasional, dependiendo del tiempo que dure el tratamiento, asimismo, consumir la medicación más alta es el riesgo de tener una catarata subescapular posterior. Los resultados mostraron que los niños con síntomas nefróticos tenían un tratamiento prolongado con corticosteroides. Quince (33 %) desarrollaron catarata subcapsular posterior en ambos ojos. Además de las conclusiones, una prueba de tolerancia a la sensibilización y preparación de especialistas, contra el uso de corticosteroides, puede reducir la formación de cataratas causadas por corticosteroides.

In Paedagogus 1.6.28, Clement describes baptism through the metaphor of a cataract surgery that enables the percipient to see God. In antiquity, cataract surgery was neither a common nor a safe procedure, which raises the question: why does Clement use such an unlikely metaphor for baptism? In this article, I demonstrate that this medical metaphor of cataract surgery enabled Clement to blur the line between the physical and the spiritual. The visual component of the metaphor allowed Clement to draw from Epicurean sensory perception and epistemology, which understood objects to emit tiny films that entered the eye of the body, with repeated contact leading to concept formation, in order to describe how the eye of the soul could see God once it has been transformed through baptism. For Clement, it is only through baptism that the cataract can be removed, thereby providing the baptized Christian with deified eyes to see God. In addition to having her cataract removed, according to Clement, the nature of the baptized Christian's vision changes from intromission to extramission, from receiving films to emitting a visual ray back to the divine. I further argue that the medical component of the metaphor allows Clement to describe the baptized Christian as fundamentally different from the rest of humanity and as part of an elite group that has undergone this uncommon and dangerous cataract surgery. Through these two aspects of his metaphor, Clement describes and defines Christians in terms of their medically modified eyes that enable them to see and to know God.
