This paper explores the most efficient teaching context to learn words’ visual aspects and by second-grade French-speaking children, including those with special needs. Students came from six classrooms and each classroom was randomly assigned to the control group or to one of two experimental interventions (TFS: explicit teaching of semantic and formal properties of words; TF: explicit teaching of formal properties of words). For students without difficulties, the experimental interventions have contributed equally to the learning of the words’ visual aspect, whereas no progress was observed for the control group. For students with special needs, only the intervention that combined explicit instruction of semantic and formal properties lead to significant progress. These results suggest that explicit instruction should focus on the semantic and formal properties of words, especially for students with special needs.

Depuis une vingtaine d’années, définir le vocabulaire scolaire est devenu un enjeu important pour les besoins de la recherche et ceux du milieu scolaire. Différentes typologies ont été proposées par les théoriciens sans aboutir à un réel consensus sur les critères permettant de délimiter ses catégories. Dans ce contexte scientifique, l’objectif du présent article est de proposer une typologie basée sur des critères explicites de discrimination entre les catégories de vocabulaire scolaire. À cet effet, sont décrits la démarche de conception de la nouvelle typologie ainsi que ses apports pour la recherche et les milieux pratiques.

O presente trabalho detalha um estudo realizado no Agrupamento de Escolas de Ermesinde no âmbito do Mestrado em Ensino de Português no 3.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. Utilizando os princípios metodológicos da investigação-ação, o projeto teve como objeto a melhoria do conhecimento lexical e da compreensão textual de alunos do 7.º ano. A identificação da área de intervenção apoiou-se no conhecimento obtido através da observação direta da turma e de registos no diário de investigador. Considerando o papel determinante destes saberes na compreensão leitora, foram implementados dois ciclos de investigação-ação referentes ao ensino explícito do léxico na pré-leitura. Os resultados demonstram uma evolução positiva neste domínio, atestando a eficácia das atividades e a necessidade de outras investigações que adotem esta estratégia didática.
