The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between specific coping strategies and problem-solving/communication behaviors in close relationships. The sample consisted of 72 couples who completed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Marital Coping Questionnaire and who also participated in a filmed 30-minute discussion where they had to solve a relational problem. Observed behaviors were coded using a macroscopic coding system for dyadic interactions. For both men and women, results show significant relationships between coping strategies, marital interaction, and marital adjustment. For women, coping strategies and behavioral dimensions independently accounted for observed fluctuations in marital satisfaction scores. Theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

Un certain nombre d'études ont porté sur les enjeux impliqués dans la définition et le traitement de la violence conjugale. Peu de recherches se sont cependant attardées à mesurer la colère dans les échanges dyadiques. L'objectif de cette étude consiste à évaluer les liens potentiels entre la colère et le niveau d'adaptation de couple. L'échantillon se compose de 220 couples provenant des populations normale et clinique. Les résultats indiquent que la colère des partenaires est étroitement liée. De plus, l'intensité des sentiments de colère, les traits de personnalité colérique et la répression de cette émotion chez un partenaire explique une partie importante de sa détresse conjugale, et à un niveau moindre, de celle de l'autre. Les implications théoriques et cliniques de ces résultats sont discutées.
