“…The five categories of cells found in the pars distalis of the warthog, bush pig, Vietnam pig and hippopotamus appear to correspond with cell types described by Bugnon (1963), Desclin (1965), and Herlant & Ectors (1969) in the European domestic pig: they resemble the pig's cells closely in staining properties and, except for one variety of mucoid cell in the hippopotamus, in morphological details. The above authors used a number of experimental procedures and make suggestions as to the functions of the several cell types in the pig.…”

“…The small oval mucoid cells (Type 4), characterized by flocculent granular material and a large eccentric nucleus, correspond with the LH-secreting cells of the pig identified by Desclin (1965) and Herlant & Ectors (1969). Bugnon (1963) identified them as gamma cells or thyrotrophs because of their affinity for Alcian blue and aldehyde fuchsin, but the quantitative and qualitative changes in these cells coincident with the luteal phase of the sow's sexual cycle observed by Cleveland & Wolfe (1933) and Desclin (1965), indicate that they are not thyrotrophs but LH-gonadotrophs.…”

“…Some of the research papers and reviews that were consulted for the purpose of making analogous comparisons were as follows: fish and amphibians (Oordt 1968), mouse [Barnes 1962[Barnes , 1963, rat (Costoff 1973), Caviomorpha (el Hakeem 197 11, rabbit (Allanson PI 01. 19661, fur seal (Craig-Aman 1972), dog (Purves andGriesbach 19571, ferret (Holmes 1960, 1963), bat (Herlant 1956;1964), Suiformes (Herlant and Ectors 1969;Allanson 197 1 ;andAnderson et al 1972), sheep (Tassel1 andKennedy 1972), cow (Jubb and McEntee 1955;Heath 1965Heath ,1970and Maracek and Arendarcik 1971), and human being (Ezrin and Murray 1963;Purves 1961Purves , 1966Herlant and Pasteels 1967 ;Lawzewitsch 1972;Baker 1974). Although there is general agreement on the identity of some cell types (e.g.…”

“…Owing to its weak reaction with most stains it has frequently been termed a chromophobe. However, it has tentatively been identified as a large red-orange or brick-red cell in the Suiformes (Herlant and Ectors 1969;Allanson 1971), cow (Maracek and Arendarcik 1971), and human being (Herlant and Pasteels 1967) with the AB-PAS-OG and AT-PAS-OG techniques. This cell has an oval or irregular shape and long cytoplasmic processes.…”

“…Chronic effect of LH-RH upon the LH-and FSHgonadotrophs was, on the other hand, examined by Debeljuk et al(1973) and Arimura et al(1973) The fundamental basis for identification of LH-cells made by Schally and his co-workers (Mendoza et al, 1973;Debeljuk et al, 1973) seems succed to the view of Kurosumi (1968) and Rennels and his associates (Shiino et al, 1972). Despite many immunohistochemical and electron microscopic investigations on the LH-secreting cells (Barnett et al, 1956;Herlant and Ectors, 1969;Bain and Ezrin, 1070;Nakane, 1070;Dubois, 1971;Mirecka and Pearse, 1971;Baker et al, 1972;Phifer et al, 1973), there is still a confusion as to the identification of LH-and FSH-gonadotrophs between immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings. Yoshimura et al(1974) compared the light and electron microscopic adjacent two slices to dissolve this confusion: They assumed them to belong to the cells in the prestage of functional cycle of FSH-cells.…”
