Leptin and Thyrotropin Relationship Is Modulated by Smoking Status in Euthyroid Subjects

Abstract: Leptin is an independent predictor of TSH concentration variations only in euthyroid smoker subjects of both sexes at all ranges of BMI, but not in nonsmokers. Age, smoking status, and positive thyroid autoimmunity also influenced TSH variability.

“…It is recognised that leptin is a component of a series of important thyroid cell processes, including the regulation of TSH expression [31] and the development of autoimmunity [32, 33], and that serum leptin levels may be related to the presence of insulin resistance in hypothyroidism [34] and to other diseases that may be associated with thyroid disorders, such as obesity and insulin resistance. However, the present study is the first to investigate the occurrence of genetic changes in LEP and LEPR genes in DTC, which might be a likely link between obesity and thyroid cancer.…”

“…An evidence that the reality might be even more complex provide the recent findings of Lucas and cols. of a possible effect of smoking on the relationship between leptin and TSH (26).…”

“…There is solid evidence that current smokers have significantly lower serum TSH levels than non-smokers, probably in relation with leptin levels [23]. This effect is dose-dependent, disappears slowly after smoking cessation and is not associated with iodine intake [24].…”
