Lentinan modulates intestinal microbiota and enhances barrier integrity in a piglet model challenged with lipopolysaccharide

Abstract: The protective effects of lentinan may be associated with inhibition of inflammation, production of SCFAs, and alterations of microbiota composition.

“…The destructed villus morphology and inflammatory reaction were induced by LPS injection, which decreased the growth performance of chicks. These phenotypes indicated that intestinal injury model had been successfully established, which is consistent with the previous researches ( Wang et al., 2019b , Zhuang et al., 2019 ). In line with our expectations, genistein treatment alleviated LPS-induced intestinal damage and improved growth performance of chicks.…”

“…The concentrations of SCFA in caecal and colonic digesta were analysed as previously described (14) using GC (HP 6890 Series, Hewlett Packard) equipped with a HP 19091N-213 column with The V3-V4 region of the bacteria 16S rRNA gene was amplified by PCR using 338F/806R barcoded primers. PCR amplification products were quantified with a QuantiFluor TM -ST Handheld Fluorometer with UV/Blue Channels (Promega Corporation), normalised and then sequenced on Miseq (Illumina).…”

“…The increased ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes is responsible for protecting the host against systemic inammatory diseases. 57 The Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes ratio in the LPS + WPSPP-1 group was increased as compared with that of the LPS model group. The abnormal dilatation of Proteobacteria is generally considered to be a key feature of the intestinal microbiota imbalance.…”
