Length-weight relationships for ten shark species from Saros Bay (North Aegean Sea)

Abstract: Summary Length‐weight relationships are presented for ten shark species sampled with a commercial trawl vessel at depths ranging from 5 to 500 m between March 2005 and June 2008 in Saros Bay, Turkey. The values of the exponent b of the length‐weight relationships ranged from 2.6816 to 3.6060.

“…Length–weight relationship (LWR) parameters are important and fundamental components for fishery assessments (Froese, ; Ismen, Yigin, Altinagac, & Ayaz, ; Mendes, Fonseca, & Campos, ). S. nukiangensis (Tsao, 1964), A. bicornis (Wu, 1977), C. kamengensis (Jayaram, 1966), C. gachua (Hamilton, 1822), and G. trilineatus (Blyth, 1860) are dominant fish species in the Nujiang river (Salween basin).…”

“…Our study was conducted in the Fuyuan reach within China, located in the middle reaches of the Heilongjiang River, northeast China. Scholars agree that the length–weight relationships (LWRs) of fish species can be used in fisheries science (Ricker, ; Martin‐Smith, ; Garcia et al., ; Mendes et al., ; Froese, ; Ismen et al., ). In our study the LWRs for Lethenteron reissneri , Pelteobagrus ussuriensis , Hemibarbus maculates , Xenocypris macrolepis and Chanodichthys erythropterus were determined in order to provide biological data from the middle reaches of the Heilongjiang River.…”

Differences in b for the same species could be attributed to one or more factors: different geographical locations with specific environmental conditions, age, stage of maturity, sex, food availability, sampling (e.g.…”
