Length dependence of the second-order optical nonlinearity in conjugated hydrocarbons

Abstract: Experimental results and a theoretical model are presented which give strong evidence that the ratio β/L2μM is a constant for a large class of disubstituted conjugated hydrocarbons, β is the second-order polarizability, μM the mesomeric dipole moment, and L the length of the hydrocarbon chain.

“…A well-known example of such a push-pull conjugated system is trans 4-dimethylamino-4Ј-nitrostilbene (DANS), [4] a member of the trans 4,4Ј-disubstituted stilbene family (Scheme 1), which has been studied predominantly for its special photophysical and NLO properties. [5][6][7][8] Currently, conjugated systems containing transition metals attract much attention, [9][10][11][12][13] especially because the optoelectronic properties of these systems can be affected by changing the metal ion, the coordinating anions and ligands or by changing the nature of the connecting conjugated system.…”

“…Compounds 1 -12, possessing heteroaromatic moieties with different electron donating abilities linked by a vinyl to the strong electron withdrawing pyridinium ring, belong to the class of the so called push-pull (donor-acceptor, D-A) molecules. Such push-pull conjugated systems are possible candidate components of non linear optics, which are already well documented for push-pull ethenes for example 4-dimethylamino-4'-nitrostilbene (DANS) 4 and for heterocyclic…”

“…Bei der Verlängerung der p-Brücke in D-OP-A-Systemen kann sich eine Erhöhung der b-Werte ergeben; [71,111,112] ähn-lich wie bei l max (n) ist allerdings auch der Gang durch ein Maximum von b(n) möglich. Der erste Fall tritt bei 56 a-c (D = OCH 3 /A = NO 2 ) auf, der zweite bei 55 a-d (D = NH 2 / A = NO 2 ).…”
