Leishmania spp. seropositivity in Austrian soldiers returning from the Kosovo

Abstract: Leishmaniasis is a severe vector-borne disease with two main clinical forms, visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Both forms of leishmaniasis are also endemic in Mediterranean countries including the Balkan region from where mainly visceral leishmaniasis is reported. Austrian soldiers returning from Kosovo were screened for anti-Leishmania antibodies to assess the risk of infection during operations. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were detected in more than 20% of the soldiers investigated, which in… Show more

“…Most recently, in 2013 sera from 261 Austrian soldiers returning from Kosovo were tested for Leishmania antibodies using ELISA. Fifty-five (21.1%) had Leishmania antibodies (36 (13.8%) positive and 19 (7.3%) borderline) [65]. These results, combined with recent detection of L. tropica in sandflies from Kosovo [66] and of anti-Leishmania antibodies in 18.4% of 125 stray dogs [67] plus observations [66] of autochthonous VL patients in village of Ljandovica/Landovice, clearly demonstrate a considerable risk of Leishmania spp.…”

“…In the past decade, the number of human and animal leishmaniasis cases in Kosovo increased (unpublished data), and it is suspected that leishmaniasis become an endemic disease in this country. This observation is supported by the recent detection of anti‐ Leishmania antibodies in sera samples collected in 2013 from Austrian solders returning from their mission in Kosovo (Kniha et al ., 2020). Of 261 tested soldiers, 55 (21.1%) had anti‐ Leishmania antibodies, with 36 (13.8%) being definite positive and 19 (7.3%) borderline positive by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay.…”

“…For example, some authors developed qPCR assay for New World species [ 15 , 16 ], while some others tested their primers in Old World species [ 17 , 18 ]. Since different reports describe the infection in travelers [ 19 , 20 ] and in military personnel operating in country endemic for leishmaniasis [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], the availability of a rapid pan -Leishmania assay, highly sensitive and able to provide a quantification and a partial classification, can certainly be useful. Moreover, a pan- Leishmania assay can also be exploited in eco-epidemiological studies, including identification of vectors and reservoirs [ 24 ].…”
