Leishmania infection: painful or painless?

Abstract: The complex life cycle and immunopathological features underpinning the interaction of Leishmania parasites and their mammalian hosts poses frequent poorly explored and inconclusively resolved questions. The altered nociceptive signals over the course of leishmaniasis remain an intriguing issue for nociceptive and parasitology researchers. Experimental investigations have utilized behavioral, morphological, and neuro-immune approaches in the study of experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). The data generate… Show more

“…14 This leads to nonitchy skin patches, loss of sensation, paresthesia, and neuralgic pain. 13 Perineural inflammation, a histopathologic hallmark of leprosy, was seen in up to 50.9% of our cases contrasting with the belief that these manifestations are unique to leprosy. 15 It remains unknown whether amastigotes damage cutaneous nerves or alter nerve conduction.…”

“…The latter infection damages epidermal nerve fibers and is toxic to nerves, promoting segmental demyelination of nerves . This leads to non‐itchy skin patches, loss of sensation, paresthesia, and neuralgic pain . Perineural inflammation, a histopathologic hallmark of leprosy, was seen in up to 50.9% of our cases contrasting with the belief that these manifestations are unique to leprosy .…”

“…The transmission occurs through the bite of female phlebotomine sandflies (98 of 800 species infect humans) (Akhoundi et al, 2016;World Health Organization, 2016b). The Old World is affected by the sandfly of the genus Phlebotomus (Kevric et al, 2015) and the New World by Lutzomyia (Borghi et al, 2017). Moreover, leishmaniasis can be classified as anthroponotic or zoonotic, the natural reservoir is human or animal, respectively (World Health Organization, 2016b).…”
