LEIS study of the protection of zinc phosphate/epoxy coatings under cathodic protection

Abstract: The anti-corrosion properties of the defective zinc phosphate/epoxy coatings under cathodic protection (CP) in a 3.5% NaCl solution were evaluated by localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) and scanning electrochemical microscopy.

“…However, it has an outstanding advantage that many electrochemical techniques can be used during immersion to generation more detailed information of coating degradation process. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is the most popular method used during immersion test, which can reliably monitor the degradation of an organic coating system [152][153][154][155] due to its high sensitivity and reliability for a high-impedance system. Due to the ingress of aggressive species or electrolyte, coating resistance decreases and coating capacitance increases [156,157].…”

“…Therefore, in this study, to quantitatively characterize the corrosion history, we adopted a variety of corrosion measurement techniques, including the localized electrode impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) (Mouanga et al , 2013; Liu and Liu, 2016; Wang et al , 2020) and the global electrochemical properties. Based on the local and global characterizations, a new corrosion model of MAO-coated AAs is proposed, providing insights for how to improve the corrosion resistance of metallic alloys.…”
